230 crews started the Tour Auto
in Paris, and Peter Singhof
tracked their progress with daily reports and photos. His

Currently on the way is the 5,000 km
Allgäu-Orient-Rallye. Among the 250+ participating
classic cars are 44 BMWs and 5 MINIs. In Italy, final
preparations are in place for the Rally 4 Regioni
Storico later this month. The U.K. will see the
GT & Sports Car Cup open at Silverstone. In June, the
Peter James Insurance Bromley Pageant of Motoring
will celebrate the classic Ford Anglia and
Cortina models. Overall 3,000 automotives of
all makes are expected for this massive single day event.
Catching up with the auction scene, we first
look at Barons. The top lot of their 217K sale
at Sandown Park earlier this month was a
1981 Ferrari 308 GTBi (30,285). Last weekend, a
1957 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster ($99,000) was
the star performer of Auction America's $2.5
Mio Spring Carlisle auction and
Bonhams sold a 1957 Bentley S-Series
Continental Sports Saloon for 235,750 at the
RAF Museum, bringing their total to 2.3 Mio (although,
the 1973 Ferrari 365GTB/4 'Daytona' Spyder conversion found no
buyer).
Less than 2 weeks remain until Bonhams, RM and
Coys hold competing events in Monaco.

Lamborghini Reventón at London
Motorexpo, expecting more than 1.2 Mio. Even higher
valued (1.5+ Mio) is Bonhams' lead car for the Aston
Martin Sale in Newport Pagnell, a 1991 Aston
Martin DB4GT Zagato Sanction II Coupé. Closing off May
will be the Barons' Jaguar Heritage Sale at
Sandown Park with a 1954 Jaguar Cars XK120 Roadster
(est. 60K+), and Historics at Brookland. One of
their feature cars is a 1939 Delage D6 70 TT
recreation (est. 184K+). Auction America starts off the June
sales in Auburn, putting up a 1930
Duesenberg Boattail Speedster (est. $500K+).
Artcurial has consigned two Ligiers
with racing provenance for the July auction of one hundred
competition and GT cars at Le Mans.
Toyota's 2013 addition to the Scion
brand will be the 2 l 4 cyl. FR-S compact
sports car. Sportive BMW enthusiasts have two
more tuning options: G-Power's SK I
supercharger boosts an "old" BMW M3 E46 to 450
hp, and Hamann has a new customization program
for M5 owners. BMW's new X1
"Sport Activity Vehicle" will reach U.S. buyers this fall.
Around the same time, Ford will launch its new
compact SUV, the Kuga.
At Auto China 2012, Audi's is
showing the RS Q3 concept, a "power" version of
their compact SUV. The marque's updated Q5
series now also sports a hybrid option. Porsche
is introducing a 420 hp Cayenne GTS, the second
generation of their SUV, at Bejing. Topping them all is
Lamborghini's whopping 600 hp concept for the SUV
market, the Urus (in case you need to get that
carton of eggs in a hurry). Mercedes-Benz's
premier at the Chinese exhibition includes the new generation
G-Class and apparently felt that even this
traditional off-road series needed the G 65 AMG
variant with a twelve-cylinder biturbo. Another world premier is
their almost production-standard Concept Style Coupé.
Citroën is using the occasion to launch their
DS line in China, showing the Numéro 9
concept to wet local appetites. Paying homage to their largest
market, Bentley has taken the
Continental GTC to Bejing and also unveiled the first
example of its Mulsanne Diamond Jubilee Edition.
Aston Martin's Dragon 88
Limited Edition is celebrating the year of the dragon in which
11 new local dealerships are slated to open. Ferrari
too is expanding, planning 5 additional dealerships for China,
already the marque's second most important market!
The Ferrari-owned track at Mugello
is hosting all Formula 1 teams, except HRT, for the
final Formula 1 test session for the season.
Porsche took the podium at the season-opener of
the International GT Open in Algarve,
with Nick Tandy and Marco Holzer
been behind the wheel. This is after the marque, represented by
Matt Halliday and Mike Parisy,
earned the FIA GT1 Round 2 win at
Zolder. At Hockenheim,
Mercedes-Benz took a 1-2 victory in the DTM
opener, complements of Gary Paffett and
Jamie Green. Chevrolet and BMW
are currently tied for the manufacturers point lead
after the ALMS Round 2 at Long Beach.
In endurance racing, a BMW Z4 GT3 took the
honors in the Blancpain Endurance Series opener
at Monza. Audi will debut
their first-ever diesel hybrid sports car with all-wheel drive,
the R18 e-tron quattro, as well as the ultra
light-weight R18 ultra in the second
FIA WEC race this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.
