V8SuperSchool - You Drive!!!

Editor (January2005): "I have now experienced the full feeling and drive of the V8SuperSchool based at Norwell (20 minutes north from the Gold Coast, 30 minutes south from Brisbane). This has to be one of the top 'things to do' in your life time, driving a replica V8 Supercar.

When you turn up to the Holden Driving Centre, where the V8Superschool is based, you are welcomed by one of their driving instructors who gets you suited up and supplied a helmet. Then you are shown a 5 minute video hosted by Marcos Ambrose and Paul Morris briefly describing the school and safety measurers for you and the fun you will experience.

"Safety first, brake here, pass there and have loads of fun" was the rule of the day as directed by the instructor, then a quick lap to visually see the braking spots and where to accelerate and the driving line you are meant to take. Then its your turn, and trust me these cars are not your everyday road car, these V8Supercar replica's move very quick, and I was a little nervous for the first four laps. 4th 3rd to 2nd gear in a matter of 3 seconds, full acceleration out of the corners and feel the 'G' force throw you back in your set.

I thought the first 4 laps were quick enough, but my instructor said to me "Great car control a little early on the brakes so next 4 laps I want you to go a bit faster!!!" WHAT was my reaction! Then while another had his turn I went up to my five year old and said "how did I do?", to his reply "You drive slow, like an old lady!!"

OK it was my next 4 laps, I told my instructor what my son had just told me, he laughed and said "well lets show him that you can drive one of these machines", and I have to say after the next 4 laps I nearly had to change my underwear.

8 laps down, 4 to go and as I walked up to the car I knew my instructor wanted me to push that little harder and finish the day with a high. (Even though the speeds you can reach at this school are more than a trip down the motorway, safety measurers are only a hands reach away for the instructor) So from starting out at a slow pace by the last 4 laps of 12 you are experiencing for yourself the full potential of these Super cars. And I have to say my son was very proud of his dad by the finish. Give it a go!!!!
